Cargill Grain and Oilseeds Supply Chain’s (GOSCNA) 4500 tonne per day canola processing plant in Clavet, Saskatchewan, is the largest softseed plant in North America. The canola crush plant east of Saskatoon, which opened in the mid-1990′s, employs approximately 100 people. Saskatchewan accounts for 50 percent of Canadian canola production. The processing facility produces canola oil and specialty canola oils as well as canola meal for the domestic North American and world markets. Canola oil is healthy vegetable oil used in salad oil, frying and processed food applications. Canola meal is a high protein feed product used by the livestock industry. In addition, there are two new significant investments Cargill is making in the canola crush business- a new 2500 tonne per day canola processing plant in Camrose, Alberta which is scheduled to begin operation in early 2015 and a refinery is being built at Clavet scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2014.
The Canola Oil Merchant is responsible for the sale, management, and logistics of all domestic/export export cash oil. Other responsibilities involved in the job description include futures & risk management; margin execution; development of merchandising strategies; and month end p&L responsibilities. This position will not have positions reporting to it.
Principal Accountabilities:
30% – Develop sales and marketing strategy for canola oil from the Clavet plant and the Camrose plant upon its completion.
25% – Develop, execute & communicate trading game-plan’s with appropriate market analysis. Define market price discovery and demand for canola oil. Provide data and analysis of oil markets as part of oil supply/demand data process and as an input to positioning cash business and futures trading. Actively contribute to overall positioning of the canola crush business including slate, board margin and product premium positioning
15% – Oversee logistics, trading game-plans, accounts receivables and contract execution for canola oil as well as other margin legs as required. Requires quick problem solving skills in a fast paced environment
15% – Daily futures and slate management and position execution in conjunction with commercial manager
10% – Integrate Canada as a member of world vegetable oil team via developing own intelligence network and communicating key information to the group
5% – Participate as a member of the Clavet business management team, utilizing balanced scorecard and other management best practices. Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Skills:
Required:
Completion of a Bachelors Degree in Science, Business or related discipline
4+ years of experience in the agriculture industry, specifically Grain or Processing
Understanding of merchandising (futures and basis)
Ability to read markets and how one affects the other
Understand relevant contract terms and customary business practices
Knowledge of freight and logistics procedures and impact
Basic understanding of production, grain flows, freight rates, domestic and export demand within geography
Demonstrated attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to work in a team atmosphere
Preferred:
Proven ability to discover and identify customer needs and build customer relationships
Basic understanding of plant operations
Customer credit risk and how to analyze new customer risk
Detailed knowledge on related industries/products
Basic understanding of production, grain flows, freight rates, domestic and export demand within geography

Proven ability to work with a production team to manage the supply chain needs for customers
