This senior leadership role, based in Iqaluit, NU, is an exceptional career opportunity for a proven manager who is conversant with the issues affecting the drafting and passage of legislation as well as the publication of laws. As Director of Legislation, you will report to the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, and supervise Legislative Counsel, translators and other support staff in the Legislation Division. This Division provides the legal and drafting support necessary to ensure that the Government of Nunavut is able to implement its policies through new and amended legislation and regulations. You, as Director of Legislation, and your staff will work directly with senior staff in all departments, including Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Assistant Deputy Ministers, as well as the members and staff of the Legislative Assembly.

Your profile as a qualified Director of Legislation will include the following highlights:
  •     Legal authorization to practise law in Nunavut, backed by a degree in Law from a recognized Canadian university and either membership in the Law Society of Nunavut or the qualifications to become a member in a reasonable amount of time.
  •     Significant experience drafting legislation and knowledge of the issues affecting the drafting and passage of legislation and publication of laws.
  •     Good managerial skills and the ability to coordinate or produce a significant amount of complex work under tight deadlines and stressful conditions, and to balance and manage competing priorities and sometimes unreasonable demands.
  •     Ability to work in a cross-cultural working environment.
  •     Proficiency in English.
  •     Equivalencies to formal education and experience requirements that consist of a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

ASSET:

    Ability to communicate in Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun.

Compensation & benefits: This senior management position is excluded from the Nunavut Employees Union, and has a salary range of $112,689 to $160,984 per annum, plus a Northern Allowance of $15,016 per annum. Note: Subsidized staff housing is available.
