ASSISTANT CONTROLLER

The Assistant Controller performs a wide range of duties including some or all of the following:


    Ensure the timely and accurate compilation of the daily, weekly and monthly P&L in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. (GAAP) Ensures that information that is supplied to Corporate to complete annual budgets, forecasting and financial statements is integral and accurate and is useful.
Develops and documents internal controls and policies and procedures which affect the entire accounting department. Ensures that internal controls are reviewed and updated annually each October by appropriate department managers. Oversees the annual audit process and ensures that Sr. Managers are ensuring that their departments are prepared on an ongoing basis by following acceptable recommendations given in previous year’s audits.
Ensures that audit checklists are distributed ahead of each audit and assists where possible with preparation.
Ensures that documentation and audit trail systems accurately and legally support the financial statements produced by the organization and makes recommendations for improvements.
Spot audits monthly reconciliations to ensure accuracy and addresses ongoing variances.
Ensures that spot audits on processes are conducted by Sr. Managers on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance to standardized practices.
Is responsible for monitoring and enforcing that appropriate procedures are followed to ensure that personnel and financial information is secure and stored in compliance with current legislation. Liaise with the Plant Controller, Plant Production Management Team and Corporate Accounting team to ensure communication is open and that shared collaboration on shared interests exists.
Drives, models and trains the management team to improve the team environment and displays strong leadership skills in the area of exhibition of loyalty to the organization and being a Champion for change and improvement within the organization.
Conducts or delegates the preparation of cost benefit analysis and budgets for proposed improvement projects in all areas of the plant as requested.
Understands, monitors and trains on relevant legislation that is applicable to the organization (employment standards, occupational health and safety, human rights, etc.) and the management of its people.
Oversee the month end activities surrounding reconciliation of GL to purchases, costing and revenue journals and bank reconciliations occurs in a timely and thorough manner.
Oversees recording of accounting department Scorecard on a monthly basis through collecting information from individual areas on Key Performance Indicators regarding Production, Quality and Cycle Time adherence.
Holds accountable individuals for ownership of performance through training and advising management on Coaching, Performance Management and Progressive Discipline policies within the organization. Assists the Plant Controller to perform necessary other duties as required.

Qualifications:
    Bachelor’s level or higher organization in a related field. (BMgmt/Admin, Comm., B.A. Organizational Psychology) Preference will be given to those who present with an Accounting designation. Courses in Managing People and/or Project Management are highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation affecting the beef industry Knowledge of provincial legislation on Employment Standards, Occupational Health and Safety, Human Rights, FOIP and PIPA Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and several varieties of Accounting Software packages. Preference will be given to those with advanced Excel and experience with CSB Accounting.
The ideal candidate will be highly analytical, focused and capable of performing at a high standard within a constantly changing and improving environment.
Strong HR skills in regards to hiring, training and development, performance management, evaluation and progressive discipline are essential.
Strong time management, organizational and process analysis skills must be evidenced prior to hiring.

Experience

    3-5 years progressive financial and management responsibility overseeing multiple functions and diverse individuals.
