Cargill is a large and reputable food company with operations around the world. Cargill Value Added Meats - Foodservice operates a chicken processing plant in London, Ontario and a hatchery in Jarvis, Ontario. The processing plant employs approximately 900 employees and processes 85,000 chickens each day. The hatchery has approximately 70 employees and, on average, produces 150,000 chicks per day. Cargill Value Added Meats - Foodservice operates ground beef processing facilities in Brampton, Ontario and Spruce Grove, Alberta employing approximately 130 employees.
Position Overview:
As the Assistant Plant Manager based out of the poultry processing plant in London, ON and reporting to the Facility Manager, you will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating plant operations resulting in the efficient manufacturing of quality products with due regard for personnel safety, food safety, the environment, employee engagement and customer satisfaction.
Principal Accountabilities:
25% - Leadership - Provide support for the entire facility through consistent guidance and direction, ensuring awareness of company policies and procedures while demonstrating an effective means to achieve them. Provide leadership and coaching to the operations managers and effectively collaborate with all area managers to help achieve our plant goals.
20% - Quality Control - Assist in establishing product quality standards and following up with supervisors to ensure any corrections to processes that are made result in improved quality. Ensure quick resolution of any quality complaints in conjunction with monitoring compliance to Sanitation and Hygiene policies and legislated requirements.
20% - Plant Efficiency - Optimize overall plant performance. Use key performance indicators to identify trends and data for areas of improvement.
15% - Labour Relations - Investigate employee or labour relations matters to bring them to a resolution. Work with area managers and supervisor to resolve grievances.
10% - Safety - Review and follow up on all accident or incident reports, maintaining compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and company Health and Safety policies. Act as a champion for safety within the facility through observations and behaviours. Promote safety every day and ensure stakeholders are working safely.
10% - Other duties as assigned - Maintain operations budget. Document and review departmental issues by working with managers to explain production variances while identifying opportunities for improvement.
Skills:
Required:
Completion of post-secondary education
Minimum 7 years of progressive food industry experience and 5 years of experience in a management position
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to lead a team and provide direction
Working knowledge of HACCP and GMP
Ability to work in a cold and damp environment with regular exposure to poultry, dander, dust, etc.
Ability to work flexible and longer work hours on all three shifts including weekends
Preferred:
Post-secondary degree in Agricultural Sciences, Business, Engineering, or other related fields
Experience in a food manufacturing environment specializing in meat processing
