Description
Beyond 3:30 is a unique initiative that provides after school programming focused on healthy living and learning opportunities for middle school children in one of the places they trust the most, their local school.
Beyond 3:30 was designed to support priority communities through innovative partnering between TDSB's Model Schools for Inner Cities Program, Toronto Foundation for Student Succes, Toronto Community Foundation, and a wide variety of local community organizations and corporations.
We are hiring now for the 2013 - 2014 school year. (Orientation and training occurs during the last week of August). Site Staff report to their respective Toronto Foundation for Student Succes, beyond 3:30 Program Manager.
Site Staff work at one school location with that school's administration, staff, students, community organizations and volunteers to organize a robust schedule of various activities. Four sets of skills and areas of programming responsibility need to be fulfilled at each beyond 3:30 site. Staff teams are hired so that individuals' skills complement one another, and all four program expertise requirements are met. We are looking for staff who can bring more than one set of skills to the program.
Responsibilities:
General:
- Serve as a role model in conduct, personal presentation and character for middle school students in priority communities
- Obtain a police reference check if one has not been completed within the past six months
- Implement a safe, fun and educational program that is accessible to all interested students
- Demonstrate proactive problem-solving and conflict mediation skills that involve engagement of appropriate program partners and the students to secure timely resolutions
Program Coordination:
- Coordinate efficient operation of the after school beyond 3:30 Program at one school site
- Ensure all staff and volunteers are aware of and adhere to program guidelines and pertinent TDSB policies and protocols
- Report inappropriate behaviour or incidents that are detrimental to effective programming to Program Manager
- Assume responsibility for recording attendance, safe arrival and departure of students
Nutrition and Food Preparation:
- Engage participants in the preparation of a healthy meal every day and bi-monthly community dinners, following the curriculum provided, respecting budget, Canada's Food Guide and the cultural representation of the school population
- Teach participants about the importance of nutrition, a balanced diet, how to read labels and other goals as noted in the curriculum
- Demonstrated safe food handling practices
- Submit weekly menu and distribute daily recipe sheets for participants to take home
Homework Help & Academic Support
- Plan and implement a variety of homework, tutorial and academic support activities, as well as literacy and leadership clubs
- Work with student placement volunteers to assist students with their homework, projects and special assignments; and with individualized literacy, numeracy and study skills tutorials
- Document activities/curriculum designed to improve study skills
- Once a week - Facilitate the Future Leaders Club- providing the babysitting certification program and working with students to organize a 'fun day' led by them at one elementary school in the spring
- Once a week - plan and implement a book club
- Once a week - Lead health and wellness discussion groups and debate activities
Recreation, Sports & Physical Fitness Programming
- Plan and coordinate the recreation, sport & physical fitness component of the program
- Incoporate the development of participants' sense of fair play, friendly competition, skill building and fun into program planning and activities
- Be prepared to facilitate a course in one or more of the following activities: Fitness & Recreation (aerobics, cooperative games, yoga, pilates, etc), Dance (various urban and culturally traditional styles), Organized sport (baseball, cricket, soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, etc)
- Bachelors' Degree or Diploma in area/s of expertise
- Demonstrated experience in youth programming; planning and delivery
- Exceptional skills in facilitation, group dynamics, and effective discipline techniques with middle school age children
- Excellent communication, leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills
- Outstanding problem solving and negotiation skills
- Enthusiastic and culturally-competent attitude toward working with youth in priority neighbourhoods
- Ability to work effectively with a team and supervise staff and volunteers from culturally diverse backgrounds with ranges of skills and experience
- Understanding of school board operations and procedures is an asset
