Policy Advisor

Are you an experienced professional with expertise in strategic policy development and research? If so, consider this opportunity in the Environmental and Land Use Policy Unit, where you will play a key role in leading, coordinating and influencing the development of land use and environmental policies and programs in areas such as agricultural land protection, rural planning, climate change, renewable energy, species at risk, biodiversity, environmental assessment, sustainability, etc.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Responsibility:
•    lead and/or participate on project teams to develop and implement policy initiatives
•    undertake technical research and evaluation studies to develop policy proposals, discussion papers and draft/revise policies
•    develop and maintain relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
•    provide information and advice to staff, senior management and industry stakeholders on related issues

How do I qualify?

Policy Development Skills:
•    you understand the policy development and approvals process
•    you can develop policy options based on research and analysis in a fast-paced work environment
•    you have demonstrated knowledge and experience in agricultural/rural land use planning and environmental management and can ensure that policy recommendations are feasible and align with the needs of the agriculture and agri-food sectors and rural communities

Research and Analysis Skills:
•    you have knowledge of research techniques and methodologies
•    you can conduct environmental scans
•    you can identify appropriate data sources
•    you can conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis
•    you can evaluate trends and assess the possible impacts of proposed policies, programs and initiatives

Communication Skills:
•    you can foster partnerships with internal staff, other ministries and stakeholders in multiple jurisdictions
•    you can communicate complex information to non-technical audiences
•    you can discuss and resolve policy development issues with all levels of staff
•    you can develop and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences
•    you can prepare a variety of correspondence (e.g. research reports, briefing notes, options papers, etc.)

Salary range: $69,680.00 – $99,600.00 per year
