Job Summary:
The Senior Network Support Specialist is responsible for the administration and support of all network devices required to meet the business requirements of Information Technology Services (ITS) clients. This position provides direct technical support for all requirements in the coordination and implementation of release or changes to the network hardware and software range of products that support the testing and production environments. The incumbent has key responsibility for the identification and resolution of hardware and software technical problems and malfunctions with respect to the network and related servers and devices. This position ensures stable performance of the network through performance monitoring and tuning and performs capacity planning and prediction. The incumbent plans and implements software/hardware upgrades and enhancements, ensuring that change management procedures and methodologies are implemented and followed.

Central Responsibilities:
• lead or participate in the planning, design and implementation of relevant architecture, hardware, software and customized software changes
• ensure that the network solution is current with stable and supported versions of software and hardware products, and that operations run smoothly
• participate in the planning and execution of testing related to performance, disaster recovery and business continuity
• maintain the highest level of knowledge of the complex system architecture and multi-tier design of a highly available environment in order to solve any problems
• conduct research into leading-edge solutions, monitor technology development and industry trends, and take the lead in evaluating new services and techniques
• perform capacity planning, network traffic/system load modelling and prediction, and provide recommendations for the purchase of upgrades or new hardware/software
• is a key contributor to the resolution of issues that cross business environments and functional areas
• as the last line of defence for the analysis, troubleshooting and repair of incidents, find solutions and make appropriate judgments and quick decisions regarding critical incidents (e.g., supporting Internet Protocol (IP) networks and IP network topologies with a variety of technology platforms; and supporting large geographically separate networks)
• participate in root-cause analysis, help derive permanent solutions to complex problems, and proactively identify, design and implement solutions to repair troublesome trends as they develop (e.g., writing scripts and managing by command line)
• participate in a leader/expert networking role, in the planning, development, implementation and support of networking solutions and key business areas
• monitor systems performance and service levels and share on-call responsibilities among team members, and act as the last level of support in ensuring that expected client service levels are maintained
• design and evolve methods to compare actual performance with established performance objectives
• provide expert advice to ITS and clients on network products, technology opportunities and concepts, standards, policies and guidelines (e.g., supporting Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) or Firewall Services Module (FWSM) firewall configuration, or Unix and other secure platforms/appliance devices)
• provide expert advice and guidance on: network, Local Area Network/Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN) concepts, including high-availability design to meet stringent service levels; policies on network evergreening and upgrades to ensure that the environments are proactively managed and not exposing the Bank to the risk of obsolete or unsupported network components; standards and guidelines on solution design, operational processes and procedures, etc.
• when designing solutions, research, identify and evaluate potential products and solutions, and leverage strategic partners when appropriate
• provide leadership in the development and implementation of best practices on technology, process and people to meet the high service levels required by the mission-critical functions of the Bank; promote and bring these best practices and disciplines to other ITS groups and clients and continue to evolve them
• maintain documentation and take part in appropriate training and knowledge sharing among co-workers
• perform high-level resolution of utility problems and resolve advanced software and hardware diagnosis to ensure stability and efficiency of the network environment (e.g., capacity planning and performance tuning of networks and network devices)
• provide input to budget, e.g., hardware, software and service contract costs, and ensure that service contracts align with service-level agreements
• build and maintain good relationship with clients, strategic partners and external vendors
• assist in the development of work and training plans
• lead Type 2/3 projects such as network upgrades for a complex infrastructure; or participate in Type 1-4 projects, providing network expertise such as designing network solutions and integrating new solutions, ensuring resilience, security and manageability
• participate in the recruitment of professional staff

Key Requirements:
• bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or related discipline with six or more years supporting critical Cisco-based network environments
or

• an equivalent combination of education and experience

in addition:
• English and French essential
• linguistic requirement: functional in second official language (training may be provided to help the selected candidate reach the required level of fully functional)
• performance and capacity planning experience
• advanced understanding of network platforms and internetworking architectures as well as web computing architectures
• expert knowledge in virtual local area networks (VLANs), routers, switches, network protocols, e.g., IP, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Internet Protocol Security (IPSec), Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM)
• general understanding of virtual private network (VPN) concentrators, intrusion detection and prevention systems, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS)
• knowledge of Cisco IOS (internetwork operating system), Cisco Nexus OS, Check Point firewall appliance and Infoblox DNS appliance

Assets:
• fully functional in second official language
• Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) designation or equivalent preferred
