DuPont Pioneer is currently recruiting for a Research Assistant based in Carman, Manitoba.
The Research Assistant will serve as an integral team member of a comprehensive corn breeding and characterization program. The Research Assistant will provide support split between research center and IMPACT program operations including following protocols to ensure the highest quality data are generated from multiple experiments. The position helps complete many tasks needed to develop superior products and knowledge that optimize value for our customers and our company.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Support the Carman Research Centre operations, including, but not limited to, data collection, field mapping, seed filling, packet sorting, planting activities, pollination, harvest, seed requests, seed shipping and receiving and supply orders.
Effectively manage assigned field research activities from experiment planning through harvesting.
Supervise short-term part-time employee crews to complete field, lab, and data collection and uploading operations according to protocols, accurately and efficiently.
Operates and maintains field equipment (tractor, sprayer, planter, combine) in support of experiments conducted at the centre.
Aid in the maintenance of seed inventory including accurate recording, removal of discard seed and efficient storage of active germplasm as well as the maintenance of the computer database.
Ensures all operations are completed in a safe manner. Assess and improve safety practices to meet safety goals for reportable incidents, zero lost workdays, and environmental standards.
Job will require occasional travel and extended hours with weekend work during seasonal workload peaks.
Skills:
Education and Experience:
Post-secondary degree or diploma in an agriculture-related discipline or high school diploma and 2 to 4 years of related experience.
Competencies:
Experience operating farm equipment required.
Mechanical aptitude coupled with computer knowledge to effectively operate sophisticated research equipment.
Interpersonal communication and teamwork skills, conflict management, work accuracy, timeliness, and adaptability to change are essential.
Knowledge of agronomy, crop production, plant development, and experimental field plot design. Ability to gain competencies with various research field and data collection equipment as well as necessary computer and data collection hardware and software.
Must be able to work outside in varying environmental and ergonomic conditions.
Strong self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, make decisions, and effectively solve problems.
Must have a valid class 5 license with the willingness to obtain a Class 1A.
