DuPont Pioneer is currently recruiting for a Senior Research Associate based at our Woodstock, Ontario Corn Research Centre. The Senior Research Associate will serve as an active team member for a comprehensive product development, characterization, and commercialization program. Position will provide technical support to existing inbred and hybrid development programs contributing to 90-95 RM commercial hybrids. Provide technical support to the inbred and hybrid development research programs contributing to 90-95 RM commercial hybrids. Lead experiment planning, execution, data collection, and data analysis activities. Manage projects and activities to completion under firm timelines and with high standards for quality. Assist the breeder in planning and tracking resource allocations for the breeding program. Collect, organize, analyze, and summarize phenotypic and genotypic information to support inbred and hybrid development, evaluation, and advancement processes. Lead molecular breeding activities, including experimental design, marker strategy and tracking resource allocation. Maintain a strong working knowledge of molecular breeding. Suggest and select strategies based upon background knowledge and available information. Manage submission of marker jobs to the lab and quality control of resulting data. Leverage marker data to assist in making appropriate decisions. Manage phenotypic and genetic information for breeding programs including developing and maintaining databases. Lead efforts to manage breeding program data through use of company-wide databases and information management systems created in-house as needed. Maintain and guide effective summaries of the breeding program to aid in decision-making. Work as a professional and productive member of the Research Centre staff. Make effective and informed decisions as needed. Share available information with stakeholders. Coordinate and collaborate with other Senior Research Associate (SRA) and scientists in the organization on shared projects for inbred and hybrid development. May organize and supervise work of other employees. May recruit, hire, orient, supervise, and evaluate employee performance. Participate in other areas of support of breeding programs at the station. Determine steps to implement analytical methodology for hybrid development. Decide on the technology to use to achieve the goal. Select and develop solutions to product/scientific problems (ex. choosing appropriate technology to solve research problems). Identify and deploy appropriate methodology for efficient and effective product development.
Skills:
Education and Experience:
M.Sc. degree in plant breeding, plant genetics, statistics, or other relevant majors in the agricultural or biological sciences is required, with a strong background in molecular breeding, computer science/information management and/or statistics. Two to four (2-4) years of industry related experience desired. Equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience are also acceptable.
Competencies:
Experience or expertise in field-based breeding and molecular breeding in maize or other crops, genetic mapping or genetic data management, and experimental design/statistics. Knowledge of plant development, physiology, genetics, agronomy, crop production, and experimental field plot design. Strong computer science/information management, data management, and statistical analysis skills. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office and other related software for data analysis, database development and maintenance, data storage, and file manipulation. The ability to learn new software will be required. Familiarity with other database management and statistical analysis software desired. Desire and ability to work in a field environment as well as in an office. Strong self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, make decisions, and effectively solve problems. Excellent personal interaction skills required for fostering teamwork, enhancing a good working environment, and effectively developing strong internal and external working relationships with a diverse group of people. Strong communication skills in spoken and written English and a proven ability to work well with a wide range of scientific and people interactions.
