Department info:
As part of the monetary policy function, the International Economic Analysis Department contributes to the Bank’s objectives in three main areas. First, it produces timely analysis of current and prospective economic developments in foreign countries. Second, it provides analysis and policy advice on global economic issues, including those addressed by international organizations such as the G-20 and the International Monetary Fund. Third, it undertakes studies on topics related to the global economy, including exchange rates and commodity prices.
Job Summary:
The International Studies and Modelling Division conducts long-term research projects on topics in international economics that are relevant to Canada and maintains a suite of models used to provide policy advice to senior management. In addition, it works closely with other divisions to develop new current-analysis tools that are based on recent research. The division maintains an active relationship with the academic community through conference participation, collaborative work and a seminar series for external speakers.
Central Responsibilities:
• initiate, lead and conduct research that is publishable in peer-reviewed academic journals on topics relevant to the department
• disseminate the outcomes of this research both inside and outside of the Bank
• work in conjunction with the Assistant Chief to provide leadership to senior analysts and economists in the team, coaching them as needed and, more generally, ensuring high-quality work
• provide leadership by anticipating issues and contributing to the development of the work plan
• build relationships and work collaboratively with external parties
• disseminate knowledge to the department’s other divisions by providing technical advice on specific issues or projects that fall within one’s domain of expertise
• represent the department on Bank-wide committees
Key Requirements:
• PhD in economics or finance and a minimum of two years of work experience conducting economic research and analysis, or master’s degree (e.g., MA, MSc) in economics or finance with at least five years of work experience conducting economic research and analysis
in addition:
• English or French essential
• linguistic requirement: the selected candidate will be required to reach the level of functional (level 4) in second official language (training will be provided to help the selected candidate reach the required level)
• ability and desire to undertake in-depth research projects to keep current in one’s field of expertise
• proven ability to publish research in Bank and external publications, including peer-reviewed academic journals
• excellent knowledge of monetary policy, international macroeconomics and econometrics
• demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate across groups/divisions
• strong interpersonal, coaching and communication skills, both oral and written, including the capacity to edit and improve the clarity and analytic content of the work of other staff
• flexibility in carrying out a number of different tasks and ability to work under significant pressure and very tight deadlines
Assets:
• functional (level 4) in second official language
• excellent track record of economic publications
• well-developed network of relevant contacts
• expertise in open-economy macroeconomics and international finance, including, but not limited to, the behavior of exchange rates and commodity prices, modelling open economies, and the international monetary system
• working knowledge of TROLL, Matlab, EViews or FAME
