Greenhouse Technician
Located in Saskatoon, SK and reporting to the Greenhouse Program Leader, you will be responsible for the coordination/management and execution of designated greenhouse breeding projects for the purpose of creating, increasing, and developing breeding lines and germplasm. Detailed observations/notes and the production of pure Breeder seed to transfer on to the Parent seed division is required for all projects to meet overall greenhouse objectives.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate/manage and execute greenhouse projects ensuring high quality standards and timelines are met
Project management; seed plans and set up, including seeding to harvest activities
Tracking of projects, data observation and detailed record keeping
Crossing and sampling, removal of genetically contaminated plants, pollination control cage initiation and maintenance and pollination vector placement, timing and management
Perform and coordinate seed logistics activities to ensure accurate movement, tracking, labeling and recordkeeping of seed within the greenhouse
Accurate data collection and management, including maintenance of seed storage, entry of data into seed inventory computers and tracking of seed within the greenhouse and movement to other departments.
Assisting in seed preparation for winter nursery
Coordinating resources as required to meet project objectives, which may include supervision of casual staff, inventory and equipment maintenance
Liaising with, and supporting, breeding and lab functions
Ensuring all activities are carried out in support of health and safety guidelines, quality management, SOP’s, breeding protocols and other internal and external regulations and practices
Providing assistance to other projects, DH and pathology lab as required.
Qualifications:
Degree in Biology, Agriculture, Horticulture or related field is a must
Basic understanding of basic genetics and plant care
Basic understanding of biotechnology, molecular biology and genomics.
Ability to take basic notes/observations and follow data collection and management requirements.
Computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office Applications.
Individual leadership skills including excellent organization and record-keeping skills
Effective verbal communication skills
Organizational efficiency, detail orientation, strong work ethic and sense of responsibility, ability to work in a team atmosphere and commitment to a safe work environment
