Vice President Audit Services
General Accountability:
The Vice President Audit Services is accountable for the oversight and delivery of high quality, professional, cost-effective, value-added and risk-based internal audit services for Wealth Management businesses globally, Manulife Bank, and the following Global Functions – Information Systems, Corporate Development & Strategy, Strategic Initiatives, Global Procurement, and HR & Communications.
This role also has relationship accountability for all audit activity in Canadian Division. The Audit Services function provides added value by working with management at all levels to improve the management of controllable risks. The function provides a service to senior management and the Board of Directors by providing reports which assist them in discharging their responsibilities for overseeing the management of risk in Manulife.
Responsibilities:
Accountable for the delivery of high quality, professional and cost-effective value-added risk-based audit services for Wealth Management businesses globally, Manulife Bank and selected Global Functions.
Understand the risk management profile of each division and monitor these profiles to identify emerging risks.
Provide leadership on ways to further improve the effectiveness, efficiency and consistency of audit services across all divisions.
Provide divisional General Mangers, CFOs and business unit Senior Vice Presidents and Vice Presidents with objective and reliable assessments of the adequacy of risk management practices within their divisions, and provide value-added and practical recommendations to improve risk management practices.
Assist business unit management to discharge their responsibilities by providing risk management consulting support, education and training, and by maintaining a business-partner relationship.
Plan and direct special audit projects identified by audit or requested by senior management.
Contribute to the development of Audit Services policies, strategy and direction; continually improve audit and administration processes leveraging technology to the fullest.
Manage Audit Services’ resources efficiently, economically and effectively. HR management responsibility for all Asia staff.
Draft relevant sections of MFC Audit Committee reports and MFC Risk Committee reports for review by Chief Auditor.
Assist with preparation and presentation of reports to Audit Committees of Division subsidiary companies. Manage the regulatory expectations.
Recruit high-caliber staff and provide appropriate development and training utilizing the Audit Services Core Competencies model.
Challenges/Opportunities:
Collaborating with management to obtain a consensus on establishing the problem, risks exposure, and corresponding recommendation to resolve the risk exposure. Understanding business risk is critical and they are unique and key in each of Manulife’s divisions and Group Functions.
Managing business unit management’s expectations regarding deadlines and deliverables.
Establishing a high level of credibility and building professional relationships with Division General Managers and CFOs and business unit Senior VPs and VPs.
Prioritization and time management in a multi-tasking environment; meeting audit plan commitments while maintaining flexibility in audit schedules to meet changing priorities.
Driving continuous improvement in quality and cost effectiveness of services provided.
Exercising and demonstrating sound business judgment.
Keeping current with new audit techniques, company policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, and knowledge of the insurance and wealth management industry.
Position Dimensions (Organizational Impact):
Manage staff – 6 AVPs reporting directly, total staff of approximately 55
Expense budget of approximately – $8 million
Direct dealings with Corporate EVPs, Division General Manager, CFO and business unit heads
Direct dealings with regulators and external auditors.
All types of audits may be performed such as: financial, operational, and system development audits as well as the assistance with the annual external audit and other projects.
Special work may be performed such as fraud investigations and other special investigations

Qualifications
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:
Ability to quickly understand business processes and their risk implications, analyze complex situations, reach appropriate conclusions, make value-added and practical recommendations and influence management to take appropriate actions on recommendations. Ability to achieve this in a North American environment as well as dealing with the additional complexities within the Asian environment.
Excellent knowledge of audit (financial, operational and system development) methodologies, control frameworks and risk management practices, and regulatory requirements (OSFI and other regulatory requirements relevant to Divisions).
Expert knowledge of Information Systems risks and processes preferred
Wealth Management, Banking businesses risks and processes knowledge desirable
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in diverse environments and cultures, over a number of geographically dispersed office locations.
Ability to effectively communicate ideas and recommendations orally and in writing, at Division and Corporate levels, and to listen and consider ideas of others.
Excellent customer focus and commitment to quality.
Results oriented; ability to balance multiple priorities and projects.
Strong relationship skills including a demonstrated ability to deal effectively with staff at all levels to Corporate EVP, Division General Manager and CFO and business unit SVPs, VPs and AVPs.
Proven leadership and management skills in achieving departmental, project and individual objectives, and in developing staff.
University degree plus a recognized accounting (CA, CPA, CMA, CGA) designation is preferred, with 15 years business experience including 6 years at a management level.
