With $129.5 billion in net assets as of December 31, 2012, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is the largest single-profession pension plan in Canada. An independent organization, it invests the pension fund's assets and administers the pensions of 303,000 active and retired teachers in Ontario.
Position Summary :
The Portfolio Manager (PM) is responsible for a variety of research activities that support the investment strategy and planning process.
Reporting to the Director, Investment Planning & Guidelines, the PM will oversee the capital planning and liquidity management research and resolve benchmarking matters as well as oversee policies and guidelines for the Investment Division. This role will include the day-to-day responsibility of leading a small diverse team. The PM will be accountable for the documentation and presentation of research results to senior management and Board of Directors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assess the existing systems, external best practices and analyze current gaps to ensure the right framework for the efficient allocation of capital and appropriate liquidity management. This includes ensuring the governance around liquidity management framework is up-to-date and appropriately specified with respect to the changing regulatory environment
- Ensure that the Plan’s capital requirements and sources of capital are accurately defined and quantified by working collaboratively with other Investment departments.
- Develop parameters to assess, forecast and monitor the efficient allocation of capital to the various portfolios within the total fund while ensuring flexibility in the framework to accommodate asset class-specific opportunities and challenges
- Ensure policies and benchmarks are updated and appropriate for the Plan’s long term goals and objectives
- Review and research total fund benchmarks
- Responsible for addressing total fund issues as they arise
- Ensure that management has the appropriate, accurate, and timely information to make decisions in terms of capital allocation, risk management, guidelines and benchmarks
- Monitor and manage current and emerging risks of the plan appropriately (e.g. emerging markets)
- Work cross-functionally with other team members and departments to ensure continued alignment with OTPP’s vision, goals and values. This includes supporting and sharing knowledge with other areas of AM&R and responding to ad hoc requests from other departments
- Keep abreast with changing regulations and identify the impacts to the Total Fund
- Manage the preparation of written reports and presentations to senior management and the Board of Directors by analyzing and consolidating key information
- May at times be responsible for Board reporting initiatives
- Five direct reports
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Business, Finance, Financial Mathematics, or Financial Economics.
- At least 10 years of related experience, including management of a team.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills and understanding of their application to risk management, portfolio management and balance sheet management.
- An ability to research and test out new ideas/concepts to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex subject matter to non-technical audiences.
- A track record of innovation and willingness to embrace new ideas
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written), strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated presentation skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Proven ability to work independently as well as to perform effectively in a team oriented environment.
- Self-motivated, flexible and adaptable.
- A team player who both respects and promotes the team while driving results.
- Experience coaching and developing others
- Successful completion of the CFA designation would be an asset.
