Cargill Specialty Seeds and Oils(SSO) is an industry leader in the development, production and marketing of high oleic oil - a transfat-free alternative for the food industry known for its superior nutrition, improved stability and excellent taste.
SSO is involved in research and plant breeding, certified seed production, contracting, crushing and marketing of high performing canola hybrids. Cargill Specialty Seeds and Oils Production Program offers farm businesses high-performing VICTORY and Invigor Health Hybrids and unique advantages, such as an attractive prime basis, risk management solutions and grower-selected delivery periods.
Reporting to the North American Breeding Manager, the Canola Breeder will be involved in developing and executing breeding strategies to develop competitive Round-up-Ready hybrids with specialty oil traits in Canada. Your primary responsibility is the development of improved elite canola inbred parental lines utilizing the latest in-breeding schemes and technologies to develop superior canola hybrids with a focus on agronomic, disease and oil quality traits. You will collaborate with commercial breeders in designing hybrid combinations to achieve high yield and desirable fatty acid profile.
As the Canola Breeder, you will actively participate as part of a cross-functional Team to evaluate and incorporate new germplasm into commercial breeding and engage with the trait development team for new fatty acid traits upload into new germplasm. You will also collaborate with germplasm screening and marker development functions.
Principal Accountabilities:
35% Supervise the parent line development program in summer and winter nursery breeding projects
35% Directly manage Greenhouse Project Requests as a principle contact to Cargill Greenhouse operations
10% Collaborate with the Trait Development and Germplasm screening Team to support field characterization
10% Support seed inventory, seed storage and pedigree documentation
10% Work with commercial breeding team in Hybrid evaluation
Skills:
Required:
M.Sc. degree in Plant Breeding or Genetics and experience in a plant breeding program
B.Sc. degree in Plant Breeding or Genetics with minimum 5 years experience in a plant breeding program
Experience in small plots and nursery research methods
Strong communication and interpersonal skills across functional teams
Good knowledge of Microsoft Applications
Ability to travel to Western Canada, USA, contra season (Chile, Australia)
Ability to work outdoors with exposure to canola pollen
Preferred:
Currently enrolled in a PhD. Plant Breeding program or PhD. in Plant Breeding
Demonstrated experience in supervising and leading a team
Knowledge of applied molecular breeding and genetics
Knowledge in hybrid breeding and seed production
