Qualifications:
The following qualifications are required:
    Bachelor level degree in Engineering (Civil, preferred).  Registered (or be eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba (APEGM), with appropriate scope of practice in the research environment specific to bridge engineering.
    Experience using specialized structural health monitoring equipment such as fibre optic gauges, electric strain gauges, data acquisition units and linear variable differential transformer’s (LVDT’s).
    Experience in structural design and behavior, structural health monitoring systems and the research environment specific to bridge engineering.
    Excellent written communication skills with the ability to prepare concise and accurate technical reports and publications.
    Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with professional staff, researchers, engineering consultants, contractors, major stakeholders and the general public.
    Able to speak publicly and conduct compelling presentations of a highly technical nature.
    Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a diverse team.
    Experience reading and interpreting bridge design drawings.
    Demonstrated progressive responsibility and the ability to work independently with a willingness to take on new challenges.

The following qualifications are desired:
    Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Conditions of employment include:
    Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
    Registered (or be eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba (APEGM), with appropriate scope of practice in the research environment specific to bridge engineering by January 31, 2014.
    Must have a Class 5 driver’s licence.
    Must be capable of performing physical requirements of position, including standing for extended periods of time, lifting up to 25 kg and wearing protective equipment.
    Work in an outdoor rough terrain environment in both winter and summer in extreme temperatures including working at heights and near or in water.
    Able to travel and be away from home for extended periods.

Duties:
This position is responsible for research and continuing technical competency in the latest advances related to bridge and highway structures; design, on-site inspection during the installation of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems and analysis of data generated from the SHM systems; research and evaluation of new and innovative materials and structural systems that could be used by the Branch; senior engineering oversight of the Approved Products and Systems list for the Branch; maintenance of Branch Manuals and standards; and project management.  This position will allow the Branch to optimize significant returns resulting from standardization and the knowledgeable implementation of state-of-the-art methods, systems and materials for better managing the provincial bridges and structures.
