Position Description:
The Orthoptist will provide clinical care to children and families and be a leader and resource in the Ophthalmology Clinic and the interprofessional team in the area of Visual Electrophysiology.
Here’s What You’ll Get To Do:
Facilitate team-specific ophthalmic care and the smooth flow of patients through the Eye Clinic.
Perform Visual Electrophysiology assessment, oculovisual and orthoptic assessment when required.
Provide evidence based care, integrate research and practice.
Maintain clinical competence and knowledge base through continued education and the dissemination of new knowledge.
Patient Care Processes:
Assess patient/family needs related to the relevant procedure.
Administer and/or supervise appropriate testing, e.g. VEPs, ERGs, PERGs, mfERGs, EOGs, visual acuity assessment, colour vision assessment, contrast sensitivity assessment for clinical investigations and clinical research projects.
Provide appropriate ophthalmic/orthoptic assessment.
Ensure accurate analysis of data.
Analyse and interpret complex data/test results.
Write patient reports to referring physicians.
Assess, evaluate and revise the interdisciplinary plan of care, in collaboration with family and health care team to ensure that patient and family needs are met.
Monitor and initiate efficiency of clinical service.
Review incoming referrals and decide on appropriate VEU tests.
Research/Education:
Participate in the development and implementation of evidence-based practice standards/guidelines and protocols.
Participate in departmental/hospital/university programs related to teaching
Participate in and/or promote research in the Department of Ophthalmology.
Contribute to and participate in educational programs regarding Visual Electrophysiology and Orthoptics.
Disseminate research and clinical findings relevant to visual electrophysiology testing/outcomes through presentations, publications, seminars.
Educate children, families, students and health care professionals regarding testing procedures
Leadership:
Identify issues related to patient flow, administrative processes and technologies within the VEU and take the initiative to problem-solve independently or in collaboration with others, including the Manager, Ophthalmology Clinic, to improve efficiencies/processes.
Organizational Responsibilities:
Daily participation in the Hospital’s Workload Measurement tool (GRASP).
Oversee VE equipment and VE database integrity and functioning: may delegate day-to-day management of either/both.
Accountable to align activities and performance with strategic goals and objectives of the Hospital for Sick Children.
Participate in the Performance Management Program annually, including the development of annual performance objectives.
Adhere to hospital standards, policies and procedures in all aspects of providing care.
Accountable and responsible to maintaining the Hospital for Sick Children Privacy and Security Policy related to patient care and patient information.
Adhere to the Respect in the Workplace/Code of Conduct Policy in all interactions with peers, colleagues and children/families.
Responsible for monthly reporting of Quality Indicators (KPI) for VEU.
Participate in departmental Quality Management activities.
Participate in continuing education activities.
Participate in departmental rounds/meetings.
Participate in hospital committees as required.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Canadian Orthoptic Council Certification, maintain required CE credits.
TCOS membership.
B.Sc. and Orthoptic Certification or Optometry license or PhD in Vision Sciences.
Experience in clinical ophthalmology specialty.
Pediatric experience preferred.
Strong communication skills (oral and written).
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated initiative and critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Demonstratedteamwork & collaboration.
Ability to work well with children.
