Conditions of Employment include a satisfactory security Check; Criminal Record Check ; Child/Adult Abuse Registry Check and online license check for current registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba or College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba. Current Standard First Aid/CPR Level “C” certificate and a certification of medical fitness. Must also be legally entitled to work in Canada.
This unique opportunity will be of interest to a dynamic and experienced nurse who would like to become a member of a professional medical psychiatric unit that provides assessment and treatment to clients within a youth correctional environment.
Qualifications:
• Active registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses or the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba and considerable related experience is required
• Demonstrated experience with clinical psychiatric assessments, crisis intervention, supportive counselling and case management for individuals with psychiatric, psychological and emotional problems is required
• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential
• Demonstrated communication, interpersonal and organizational skills is required.
• Experience in suicide prevention/intervention is required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with psychotropic medication is essential.
• Knowledge of Aboriginal Culture is desired.
Duties:
The incumbent will be a member of the health care team reporting to the Health Service Manager in a youth correctional centre. Responsibilities include: individual counselling, responding to emergency situations, crisis intervention. Conducts clinical assessments; conducts suicide risk assessments; triages and refers clients to Youth Forensic Services; assists in developing behaviour management/treatment plans for offenders; implements, assesses and refers to programs and interventions in co-operation with other professionals. Provides mental health education to offenders including medication counselling. Participates in multi-systems team conferences and may provide general duty nurse coverage as required. As a member of the medical team, the incumbent must be able to work with considerable independence and without direct supervision. Some weekend and shift work will be required.
