As a seasonal member of our Canola Breeding Group, you will be responsible for completing operational tasks relating to field evaluation of plant breeding materials and germplasm. Terms from March until October as well as May until August are available, with possibility for extension depending on business needs. Multiple positions are available.

Located in Saskatoon, SK and reporting to the oilseeds breeding technical staff, you will be responsible for completing operational tasks relating to small plot field breeding trials and nurseries.

You will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
    Providing assistance with tasks relating to the establishment, maintenance, harvesting and site cleaning of nurseries, which may include:
    Setting up summer and contra nursery programs, including seed treatment
    Field preparations and seeding of small plot nurseries.
    Operating small plot equipment, such as, tractors, sprayers, and tillage equipment to complete tasks such as spraying or cultivation.
    Taking accurate agronomic notes on small plot field trials.
    Operating a small plot combine or swather.
    Assisting with fall land preparations.
    Assisting technical staff and plant breeders with other duties as required.
    Assisting with transplanting, establishment, maintenance, and management of tented pure seed increase programs, with a high level of quality assurance.

Skills/Experience Required:
    Currently enrolled in or completed an undergraduate degree in Agriculture or a related natural science program.
    Punctual, reliable, and able to work outdoors.
    A high level of attention to detail resulting in consistent outcomes.
    Proven problem-solving abilities in team and individual settings.
    Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.
    Willingness to learn and apply new information practically.
    Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Preferred:
    Small plot field trial experience and/or agricultural or farm experience is an asset, but not required.
    Mechanical aptitude with farm machinery is an asset, but not required.
