Hours of Work: This position works a standard 35 hour work week.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Design, this position is responsible to work independently on assigned projects which include:

    Review functional designs, detailed horizontal and vertical geometry, and conformance with City, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and Alberta Transportation standards on work submitted by consultants.
    Check grades of new roads and interchanges submitted by consulting engineering firms.
    Design of special projects such as expressways and freeways, arterials, interchanges, intersections, and miscellaneous projects.
    Design urban and neighbourhood boulevards that accommodate active modes of transportation.
    Prepare geometric design for traffic calming measures proposed by Transportation Solutions.
    Undertake design of facilities for other corporate portfolios such as parking facilities and bus lay bys for Transit, access roads to various City owned infrastructures and road grades for subdivision developments.
    Set grades required for utility vaults, manholes, etc. for utility companies.
    Maintain filling system for complaints, circulation comments, record drawings and plans.
    Coordinate with the relevant staff of other business units in Transportation Department to confirm their project design requirements and delivery schedule.
    Answer general enquiries about grades and designs.
    Investigate complaints received from the public and taking action to resolve these problems.
    Coordinate drainage, safety and traffic signal for roadway projects.
    Calculate material quantities for various projects.
    Review the drafters' work, provide guidance and direct them to complete the design details.

   
Qualifications
The successful applicant must possess a completed two year diploma in an engineering related field (i.e. Civil Engineering, Drafting or Surveying) and a minimum of five years of progressive experience in street design and construction, subdivision and/or roadway design. Experience working with government or consultants relating to roadway/interchange design is an asset. Additional training in Environmental Protection Legislation and sediment control and safety would be considered assets.  A basic level of proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D would be an asset, along with any courses in roadway design computer software. Familiarity with City Design Standards, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and Alberta Transportation standards is an advantage.

The successful applicant must have the ability to work with a variety of groups including engineers, surveyors, draftspersons, inspectors, aldermen, and the public. Applicants should be able to demonstrate effective communication skills, computer literacy, use of coordinate geometry, excellent mathematical ability, and excellent communications skills are required.
