Job title:Water Distribution Operator
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 4:00.
Some 10 hour shifts possible.

Function/Purpose:
Water Distribution Operators responsible for day to day and emergency operation and maintenance of a Class IV Water Distribution system.
Key accountabilities are to perform work functions that ensure compliance to established policies and procedures, OH&S, and the AENV Approval to Operate.
Distribution Operators provide for the safe, efficient and reliable supply of high quality water in the distribution system for all users and to provide direct customer service for water related issues.

Job Requirements:
    Grade 12 or equivalent
    Unrestricted Water Distribution Level 1 Alberta Environment Operator’s Certification or equivalent with a requirement to achieve Level II within 4 years
    Must successfully pass all safety certificate courses currently required and others to be defined by the Province or by the City
    Must successfully pass courses in the repairs, servicing, calibration, and installation of water meters.
    Fall Arrest / Hazard Assessment / WHIMIS / 1st AID/CPR / TDG / Confined Space / Valid Class 5 Drivers License
    4 years (minimum) in a Level III or IV Provincial Water Distribution operation or equivalent. To maintain certification, they are required to achieve 3.6 CEU each 3 years.

  •     Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions and to provide guidance and instructions to junior operators or Waterworks labourer’s
  •     This position is an important front line customer contact point, and is responsible for responding promptly and courteously to customer complaints, investigating complaints on site and interacting with customers to identify problems and to explain solutions.
  •     Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to accurately use a wide range of portable monitoring and laboratory testing equipment. Ability to take due care and attention when installing equipment without damaging exteriors of businesses or residences.
  •     Strong computer aptitude including demonstrated proficiency with databases, spreadsheets and word-processing software. Ability to maintain data bases and create reports.
  •     Must be physically fit in order to climb ladders, work at heights, open and close valves, lift, shovel, bend and twist in awkward positions
  •     Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be noisy, dirty, wet, cold, confining, hot and disagreeable
  •     Ability to exercise care when working in traffic to place of barricades, signs, and traffic cones around work sites to protect operators and public
  •     Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized protective equipment including respirators, and air quality monitors. Some work may require use of harnesses and hoisting equipment
  •     Be able to read and understand blueprints, drawings, schematics and maps

Specific Demands of the Job:
  •     This position is responsible for being aware of and complying with all applicable regulations, policies and procedures for day to day operations and to immediately report non-compliance situations
  •     This position requires operators to troubleshoot problems and exercise critical thinking in the execution of their duties
  •     This position may significant impact on public health and safety. Operators are accountable to provide a continuous supply of potable water to all customers and could have personal liability exposure in the event of the loss or contamination of the public water supply
  •     Incumbents in this role are mandated by legislation to attain and maintain required certifications and may be subject to external audits, spot inspections and other reviews to ensure compliance with these requirements
  •     Distribution Operators are also required to interact directly and professionally with customers without supervision in potentially adversarial/confrontational situations
  •     This position will require the incumbent to work in hazardous work environments including in traffic. Other hazards may be encountered through entering domestic and commercial properties; site specific regulations may also need to be adhered to if requested by the property owner/developer
  •     This position has a wide range of functional responsibilities and skill requirements, from hydrants to meters to customer service, and is required to be proficient with a variety of tools and equipment
