Job title:Embedded Firmware Guru
Company:Braingrid Inc.
Location:Toronto, ON, Canada (at CSI/Spadina)
Deadline:30/09/2013
Braingrid Inc. was founded to help humanity by challenging traditional thinking in the realm of energy. We wanted to create a shift in energy behavior, an energy movement; heck, even an energy reform! A lofty goal – yes, but one we've made some headway in. At Braingrid, we knew instinctively that every technical, social, environmental, political and financial solution needed to solve the "energy problem" had already been invented and was just waiting to be integrated into market shaping products, services and solutions.
So we asked ourselves:
What’s the first step in creating a global energy transformation?
The answer: Cheap and behavior-altering knowledge.
We discovered that electricity was the least understood and often the most abused energy source so we've successfully designed and patented very inexpensive but very elegant electrical metering hardware. So, we've made distributed, extremely low cost wireless energy metering a reality. All without the need to touch any wires or turn off the power to install the meter!
You will:
Be the key firmware architect to expand the wireless endpoint meter beyond the BSP/prototype
Co-ordinate with the main data node’s team to realize a pseudo-mesh low-bandwidth network
Write low-level drivers for a TI microcontroller with an embedded 900MHz wireless transceiver
Perform complex (and interesting) mathematical calculations quickly in an extremely power constrained environment
Integrate existing APIs and libraries (wireless, math, etc.)
Follow and contribute to a well-documented software spec.
Design heuristic power management algorithms and deterministic routines to achieve maximum endpoint run-time
Write clear documentation for core APIs, diagnostics and headers
Communicate the next hardware revision’s requirements to the hardware team
You need to have:
2-4 years of embedded Computer programming experience
BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a significant hacking portfolio
A true commitment to helping humanity; to leave the planet a better place once you’re dead
An uncompromising desire for finding elegant, minimal and robust code
Worked with DSP and/or hardware acceleration
It would be great if you have:
An understanding of utility power systems
familiarity with assembly, particularly in TI based xx430 micros
a passion for Linux, Python and the open source motto
a working understanding of basic LCD modules (think calculator LCD)
comfort when looking at schematics and layouts
You will receive:
Competitive compensation
Equity options: we want you as invested as we are
Growth opportunity: we take care of who takes care of us. It’s a ground floor operation.
A flexible work schedule: You govern yourself so no micromanagement here
The chance to work on the bleeding edge with some pretty badass hardware
Who we are:
A small team of investors, engineers, advisors, strategic partners and visionaries with an unwavering drive to deliver the next generation of energy awareness products. With each person bringing to the table what the others can’t, we learn, grow and develop our products to satisfy the three pillars of energy reform: societal, environmental and economic.
We invite you to join us and see for yourself the limitless possibility that lies within the spark of your creativity.
