Qualifications:
Post secondary education in social sciences with directly related experience and/or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.  Knowledge of Aboriginal culture, history and justice issues is required, as is the ability to work in a culturally sensitive manner.  Experience in community networking is desired.  Assessment skills and effective intervention planning in a social services setting are required.  Experience with case management, for both youth and adults, is required.
Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, as are the abilities to work independently and in a team environment. Proficiency using various computer software including MS Office or equivalent is required.  Ability to travel, a valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are required, as is the ability to work flexible hours.

Duties:
The Probation Officer, as part of the Parkland Regional Team, provides: an alternative to court action, alternatives to incarceration, assist in reintegrating offenders into the community and develops opportunities for community involvement in community corrections and crime prevention.  The probation officer manages offenders with the appropriate degree of control, supervision and support and by providing appropriate programs, services and encouragement to assist offenders to deal with those issues which brought them into conflict with the law.  The probation officer participates as a team member in the planning, implementation and evaluation of all the services delivered by the unit and contributes to the program initiatives by strategy development, support of justice committees and Honorary Probation Officer functional assignments.
